Spider-Gwen makes her cinematic debut in 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse"

Unless you haven’t’ been on twitter in the last three days, you’ve probably seen the dazzling new trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse.In which an amazing cast take on the likes of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), Peter Parker (New Girl’sJake Johnson) and Kingpin (Liev Schreiber). But the stand-out for many was the reveal of a character no one expected to see, Spider-Gwen.

Created by Jason Latour and Robbie Rodriguez in 2014, Spider-Gwen made her debut in The Amazing Spider-Mancomic series, Edge of Spider-Verse. The comics showed us a world (Earth 65 to be exact) where it was in fact Gwen Stacy who was bitten by a radioactive spider, instead of Peter Parker. She’s known to her public as Spider-Woman, and has become a huge fan favourite in the four years she’s been around. We’ve seen a recent animated iteration on the small screen in Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man, where she was voiced by Dove Cameron. However, that aired on Disney XD and Into The Spider-versewill undoubtedly bring her to a wider audience of those not familiar with the comics.

Academy Award nominee, Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit, The Edge of Seventeen), has taken on the role for Gwen’s official cinematic debut, due for release December 14th.
The directing duo behind acclaimed box-office success, The LEGO Movie, Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, have overseen production; so, we can assume Miles and Gwen are in good hands. “How many more Spider-people are there?” Miles asks as Gwen swings in. Well, boasting three that we know of so far and a refreshing animated style, we’ve no doubt Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse is something to get excited about.
